Rural Tourism Portugal
I am not a travel journalist, nor a fancy, overpaid copywriter.
I write solely from the heart, having first stayed at mAtinha on my honeymoon in 2001. We went from being guests to friends overnight. That’s what mAtinha does to you i suppose.
You will come across mAtinha in the coastal hinterlands of rural Alentejo, about 150 kms south of Portugal’s capital, Lisboa. The Alentejo is different from say Provence, or Tuscany. Put simply, it is more rustic, more real; more relaxed.
This countryside getaway can be found in the mountain valleys of Cercal do Alentejo, approximately 10 kms from the sea, and is set in 120 hectacres of breathtaking nature. The buildings themsleves are restored shepherds cottages, barns and cattlesheds, all extended into 2 separate bulidings. These buildings are an original mixture of wood, stone and masonry. On most walls hang the canvasses painted by Alfredo, as much an artist as he is chef. These paintings help make H d M truly unique.
Located in the heart of the Alentejo Coast, in the picturesque village of Cercal, Herdade da Matinha invites you to true luxury: silence.
Matinha extends over 110ha of cork oak and pine forest, where the Casa do Lavrador, the Vacaria and the Celeiro were restored, which today give soul to the two houses of the Herdade, Casa de Cima and Casas de Baixo.
It is in its 20 inspiring rooms, all of them uniquely decorated, that our guests let themselves be carried away in a dream experience.
And there is no shortage of experiences at Herdade da Matinha, our green fields are the stage for many of them, where you can enjoy a horseback ride, a picnic or even a Yoga or Pilates class.
The Rota Vicentina is just a few steps from the Herdade and invites you, on foot or by bicycle, to enjoy the unique fauna and flora of the Alentejo, and to reach the nearby towns of Porto Covo, Vila Nova de Milfontes, Zambujeira do Mar or even even for the most experienced to Carrapateira or Sagres. The different birds that can be seen here are unique for the practice of Birdwatching and their chirping will be the music that accompanies you on this adventure.
The wonderful beaches of Malhão and Aivados are just 10kms away and the sea is perfect for surfing, bodyboarding and other water sports.
Gastronomy is one of the pillars of this charming unit, which, through local, fresh and high quality ingredients, turn meals into true gastronomic emotions.
Herdade da Matinha is a pearl in the traditional and genuine Alentejo that, through a distinguished service, offers you an authentic rural Portugal experience.
