Food is Life

Alfredo, artist and master chef (though he is too modest to admit it) along with Paulo Corte Real, a noted Portuguese food expert, put on weekend cooking workshops for beginners, wanna-bes and the well-seasoned. As food is at the heart of the H d M soul, you can learn to cook with the gods of great, simple, really tasty, homemade food. I can talk from experience. I am a cooking freak. There is a natural twist to cooking at Matinha; most of all the ingredients are local, fresh, mainly organically- grown produce. Click on the menu to see for yourself.

Breakfast

Perhaps the best way to start the day. Everything is served fresh at breakfast time. The sunlight. The aroma of fresh coffee. The lemongrass tea. The fruit. The cheese and smoked ham. The orange juice is out of this world. All you have to do is go outside into the garden and pluck the choicest, fattest oranges and tangerines off the trees and squeeze them.
But best of all is the Alentejo bread. First thing in the morning, someone from the staff drives 10 kms to the local bakery, which still operate the old traditional open fire ovens. And the bread tastes out of this world.

Lunch is a very informal affair. You simply ask Alfredo or Monica after breakfast what you’d like later, and they’ll tell you what they’ve got; whatever is served up is always a pleasant, healthy and tasty surprise.

If breakfast at Matinha is the perfect way to start the day, dinner is the ideal way to celebrate it. The approach to making dinner is made up of many different culinary inlfuences. Alfredo and Monica even invite guests to join in preparing the supper. Dinners are never the same at Matinha, and you can discover the pleasure of good food.

The food extravaganzas are unique to Herdade da Matinha. Guests sit on sofas in front of the log fires or seated across the tables, and exchange recipes, experiences and favourite dishes. Passion for good food, and wine, and life is what Herdade da Matinha is all about.

These are special weekend breaks with food-loving , but amateur chefs. They start with a wonderful, sumptuous dinner on Friday nights, the meal prepared by Alfredo and his team.
After a lazy breakfast on the Saturday, you can go exploring the local surroundings, or simply chill out at Matinha. Its really up to you.
By mid afternoon, the kitchen is already abuzz with preparation for the “big dinner extravaganza”. But is this case it is a “guest cook” who chooses the menu and prepares the meal with the help of Alfredo and his staff.
As people make their way back from their days’ adventures, they are normally greeted with the mouth-watering aromas emanating from the kitchen.
After a shower and spruce up, the guests meet in the dining room and the feast begins...

mAtinha has a family feel about it; informal is the name of the game. Guests are invited into the kitchen if they want to help prepare lunch or dinner, or make the cocktails. There are no airs and graces at Matinha. The idea is for people to simply enjoy themselves.
