"Complete Relax"
Very good for relaxing, beautiful countryside views, great decor. For those who enjoy horse riding is very good and  Joanna an excellent riding monitor. Very comfortable and romantic rooms. Just have to say that the meal prices are high, even with the good food!

Ana S - Peniche, Portugal

"Enjoy this Paradise"
If you want a space of good taste, great food and peace come to the new Matinha. I was here 3 years ago and found that these gentlemen are way ahead regard to create comfort for its guests. it is  amazing. We want to come back often and advise everyone to go through this house. Very good!

"Oh wow"
Never seen something like this: remote, quiet, relaxed, it almos seems time stood still in a mix of Western and a little bit of the hippy times...
Breakfast was very fresh, a very Large wine chart (great), Nice pool and the best part: a tv with no channels "bad news stays at home"...
You can have dinner here, no menu, you eat what´s prepared in the kithchen, wich was great.
Great place to unwind.
Rooms aren´t very big, but we didn´t matter, we had a great stay!

"Amazing Spot"
The aesthetics of the place are unmatched. Every nook and cranny masterfully decorated in a wholly welcoming and wonderful way. Owner Alfredo's paintings decorate the walls of public spaces, are featured tastefully in the rooms, installed outside. The furniture outdoors is arranged as if by fairies, always inviting, always perfectly positioned for a breeze, some shade. , The oranges trees are everywhere as is the their scent, the buzz of their bees and their juice available fresh squeezed any time. , We so enjoyed time with their beautiful horses, brushing them and riding them through forests of eucalyptus and cork trees. , Family style but elegant dinner for adults and in parallel for kids was delicious and our favorite way to end the day. The more time in the inviting dining room the better. The pleasing linens, the lovely dishes, the vases the fresh flowers, and the cooking and architecture and design books around the perimeter of the room. , The room #16 was perfect for a family of four. Very easy to have a breeze flow through when warm, cool with the thick walls: as it was April we were conveniently provided with a useful space heater. , No taxes, no fees, no nickle and diming for a bag of bread and butter sandwiches and fruit for my kids before a hike; no charge for the afternoon my nine year old spent making cookies with the staff in the kitchen. , We enjoyed the hike along the well marked trail to join the costal route. Spring flowers in abundance. Whole family had fun with our first surfing lesson with Flavio. Wetsuits were amazing, pricing too. , Staff was so helpful, owner Monica and especially Sonya. We stayed four nights, hope to return. Strong internet in comfortable lobby areas, inside and out. Wonderful wine and port and cocktail selections to accompany the lovely meals. Bliss.

To taste life.
That is one of the mantras at Monica and Alfredo's Herdade da Matinha. We like to invite guests and friends to cook with us.
Yes, really.Alfredo and his kitchen team will show you the tricks of the trade, not only Portuguese food, but the fusion of different styles and cultures. Absolute beginners are welcome. Because knowing how to cook, is to taste life.
Picture this.
Its another beautiful day in Matinha.
The last time you went horse riding may have been when you were a teenager.
The estate has a stable of 8 horses.
And wonderful, rugged land and shoreline all around. Put those 2 together, and you can go riding amongst the groves on the hills. Follow footpaths at a leisurely pace.
Or pace along the beaches at a gallop.
With the sun on your face. And spirit in your soul.
Portuguese wines. Europe's best kept secret. The simple truth is that Portugal has never mass produced wine (like other countries). The small quantities of good wine produced tend to stay in here Portugal. That's why it's our little secret.
At Matinha, you can try an array of the country's finest. From Douro, to Alentejo and in between. White, green, pink, red.
Mostly unknown, and rarely tasted.
And that's without mentioning our Port wines.
Nothing against health clubs.
But today, its all about walking, rambling, cycling, nature...These are the real, and new, healthy living lifestyles.
The 340 km nature route, Rota Vincentina, runs by the doorstep of Matinha.
Herdade da matinha, a family estate covering 110 hectacres, lies 3kms from the village of cercal, on portugal’s unspoilt alentejo coast.
The estate lays amongst picturesque hills and valleys where silence is golden, only occasionally interrupted by overflying birds and grazing wildlife.
The houses on the estate are converted farmers’ buildings and barns.
In all, there are 20 rooms, all individually designed and tastefully decorated.
For the more active, the lush and green countryside is perfect for gentle strolls and rambling. Matinha also has a stable with 8 horses on which guests can amble through mediterranean woodland to the nearby beaches. Many of our friends opt to take a picnic hamper along too, prepared by our kitchen staff.
Once back at matinha, there are classes in yoga and pilates, and body massages for those who love feeling pampered.
Matinha is also a stone’s throw away from rota vicentina, a total 350 kms of footpaths of breath-taking beauty, where one feels completely at one with nature. This is a walker’s and cyclists paradise, as it is for birdwatchers.
Also along the way is the fishing village of porto covo, the coastal village of vila nova de milfontes, and for the more intrepid, carrapateira and sagres further south.
Beach-lovers have got easy access to the expanses of nearby malhao and aivados, with miles of coastline, great surfing and clean seawater (much better and healthier than the mediterranean sea).
Late in the day, after a shower and getting ready, there is the pinnacle that makes matinha what it is. The gastronomy. All food is locally sourced and homemade, and the wine list includes some of the best portugal has to offer at very reasonable prices. The atmosphere is informal and friendly, the music very chilled, and the meals exquisite. Some dinners at matinha have been known to start at 20h and only finish after 2 a.m.
Herdade da matinha is the authentic alentejo experience. The author of this text knows; i have been visiting matinha for the past 12 years and i have fallen in love with it.
And so will you.

Herdade da Matinha hotel is a riot of colour in a lush valley.
15km from Malhao beach

Hidden in a valley 5km south of Cercal, this country house is bursting with colour, thanks to owner Alfredo’s vivid paintings and red, pink and orange doors, chairs, sofas and cushions. Guests lounge in daybeds and by water features looking like they never want to leave. And if you make the most of the yoga studio, horse riding and cool pool it would be easy not to. Those who want to walk the Rota Vicentina could not be better placed as it runs right through the property.
Dinners are prepared by Alfredo and Monica and served at high tables laden with vases of wild flowers and vintage kitchenware (meals are not cheap, though, at €38 a head for three courses, excluding wine). Family suites have bunk beds in a separate space visible from the parents’ room.
